ASL Resources Online

I have compiled a list of websites containing ASL vocabulary in various formats (lexicons, dictionaries, full ASL videos). I'm assuming most interpreters know of at least a few of these… but if there is even one resource here that is beneficial to you, then this list is worth it! I have arranged them in order my most to least favourites (although they are all very good!).

ASLPro: http://www.aslpro.com/

This is a great website containing a full dictionary of English words/phrases translated into signs/phrases, it also has a religious signs dictionary, a dictionary of English conversational phrases translated into ASL and a list of ASL idioms (listed within the Conversational Phrases). This is my favourite website to refer people to when you get the "Oh, I've always wanted to learn sign language!" (along with the referral to the local Deaf and hard of hearing agency ASL courses of course).

ASL Library: http://www.needsoutreach.org/Pages/sl.html

If you haven't found this website yet, you're in for a treat :p This is geared towards people working in educational settings, so the signs are categorized by subject (i.e. Biology, Government, Auto Mechanics, Math - Elementary).

RIT Math/Science Lexicon: http://www.rit.edu/ntid/msse/pages/lexicon

Another great website for educational interpreters which focuses on Science and Math vocabulary. Every sign is signed twice and there is a rating system below the sign for feedback from ASL users.

DeafMD: http://www.deafmd.org/

This is an amazing website created for the Deaf community but of course will be a great resource for interpreters as well. This is not in a lexicon form, instead you can search for diseases and illnesses in alphabetical order, then you get the option of watching a brief video explaining what the ailment is in ASL and you can pick from a side menu for more information on symptoms, diagnosis, care & prevention, to name a few. An added bonus: there is an English translation below each video.

Deaf Missions: http://www.deafmissions.com/ (click on Tools & Resources)

This website is great for religious work as it contains not only a dictionary of religious signs (using animated illustrations) but also videos of Deaf preachers signing an ASL Sermon series, daily devotions in ASL and the New Testament in ASL (searchable by verse)!

ASL Dictionary (Lifeprint): http://www.lifeprint.com/

This dictionary shows signs using photos in sequence. The nice thing about it is that the signs are typed in an ASL format (full caps for English glossed words, # for fingerspelled signs) and there is a brief description of the sign usage and any additional information to clarify the articulation of the sign.

The Mayonnaise Jar

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle,
When 24 hours in a day is not enough,
Remember the mayonnaise jar and 2 cups of coffee.

A professor stood before his philosophy class
And had some items in front of him.
When the class began, wordlessly,
He picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar
And proceeded to fill it with golf balls.

He then asked the students if the jar was full.
They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured
Them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly.
The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.

He then asked the students again
If the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand
And poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else.
He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded
With an unanimous 'yes.'

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table
And poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively
Filling the empty space between the sand.
The students laughed.

'Now,' said the professor, As the laughter subsided,
'I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life.
The golf balls are the important things - God, family,
Children, health, friends, and favorite passions –
Things that if everything else was lost
And only they remained, your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter
Like your job, house, and car.

The sand is everything else --
The small stuff.'

'If you put the sand into the jar first,' he continued,
'there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls.
The same goes for life.

If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff,
You will never have room for the things that are
Important to you.

So...

Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.
Play with your children.
Take time to get medical checkups.
Take your partner out to dinner.

There will always be time
To clean the house and fix the disposal.

Take care of the golf balls first --
The things that really matter.
Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.'

One of the students raised her hand
And inquired what the coffee represented.

The professor smiled.
'I'm glad you asked.

It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem,
There's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend.'

Thanks to Becky for this one.

Entering the 21st century!

Welcome to the brand new AVLI-NB Journey Blog!

The idea of blogging is a new one for us (thanks Susi Bolender, from WAVLI for the idea!), but since it's 2009 it's probably about time for us to get with the times and start using the technology that's available to us.

Right?

So this site will be primarily for posting information on events, meetings, and news for our members and subscribers. We will probably be testing and tweaking it for a while, so any feedback is welcome!
